Back in 2002, Dr Jim went to Guatemala to adopt his youngest daughter, Karina. While there, he learned of an animal shelter in Sumpango, Guatemala. This shelter had recently opened a veterinary clinic on the property and was having veterinarians from other countries come to help out. Dr Jim decided that he would like to go some day. Beginning in 2005, Mapleview began sending supplies to the shelter, Hound Heights. Plans also began to actually visit the shelter and help out. That first trip took place in November 2005.
Since that time, Dr Jim increased his presence in Guatemala and now also does work for several other rescue/animal organizations. Dr Jim and the staff of Mapleview make a minimum of two trips per year assisting these organizations by bringing supplies; performing spay/neuter clinics; or helping out wherever else is needed.
